Finding local labour market information (LMI) that’s reliable, engaging and easy to digest can often be a challenge. In England, schools and colleges are required to provide good quality careers and labour market information as part of the Gatsby Benchmarks requirements (Benchmark 2) but there’s no central location for obtaining ‘off the shelf’ local information in a useable format.
That’s why I’ve created the Know Your Local Job Market series of posters for schools and colleges to display in careers offices, classrooms, libraries, corridors or anywhere they may catch the eye of young people and teaching staff.
The posters highlight the sector strengths of the local area – industries where local leaders expect jobs and businesses to thrive and grow. Jobs in these sectors are amongst those where skills are in high demand, and we can expect to see lots of vacancies in these roles in years to come.

As well as local intelligence such as sector strengths, LMI can also come in the form of data, and the posters show average weekly earnings as well as the share of people who work full time or part time. This information encourages young people to make comparisons and can spark discussions about what the job market is like in their area. Subject teachers for maths or geography can also draw on the data in lessons and explore it further.
A growing demand for higher skills is a feature of the changing world of work and highlighted on all posters. This is essential knowledge for young people who will see more job opportunities in their lifetime requiring a level 4 or above qualification than today’s workforce.
